Apple officially introduced iOS 26 at WWDC 2025 in June, bringing a range of updates, design tweaks, and new features for iPhone users. Like every year, the big question for many users is — will their iPhone support the new version? With the update now in beta and a full release expected this fall, Apple has confirmed the list of supported iPhones. Some older models are being left behind, while others are still hanging on.

iPhones That Support iOS 26
If you’re using an iPhone released in the last few years, you’re likely in the clear. Apple is continuing support for models starting from the iPhone 11 series, along with newer iPhone SE versions. The full list includes:

That’s a fairly generous range, giving many users access to the latest version of iOS.
Devices Losing Support
On the flip side, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max are no longer eligible for iOS 26. These devices were part of the 2018 lineup, so it’s not too surprising to see them drop off now. Apple usually provides updates for five to six years, and these phones have already seen several major iOS releases.
What About Apple Intelligence Features?
The majority of the devices on the above list are capable of running iOS 26; however, not all of them will be able to utilize all of its features. Under the brand name Apple Intelligence, the company is launching a new set of services, such as improved Siri, image creation, and writing assistance. Only iPhones with the A17 Pro chip or newer can use these functions.
Accordingly, the Apple Intelligence is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the full iPhone 16 series. Even though they generally support iOS 26, regular iPhone 15 and previous models will not receive these AI-driven updates.
When Will iOS 26 Be Available?
The public beta of iOS 26 is expected to be released later this month, while the developer beta is now underway. The final version is anticipated to be released in September, under Apple’s customary annual release timetable. The iPhone 17, which is expected to come with iOS 26 pre-installed, will be released at the same time.
Should You Upgrade Your iPhone?
There’s no rush if your existing phone is working and on the supported list. But it might be a good time to consider upgrading if you’re still using an older model, such as the XR or XS, for iOS 26, as well as for future security updates and app compatibility in the years to come.
The choice is more obvious for those who are interested in Apple’s AI tools. To take advantage of everything iOS 26 has to offer, you’ll need one of the more recent Pro models.
Although iOS 26 maintains Apple’s long-term support strategy, some older iPhone models are now excluded. It’s helpful to know where your device stands, regardless of whether you decide to upgrade right away or wait a little while longer.
